Introduction to Tsuguharu Foujita's works and the museums that house them

Introduction: Introducing the Japanese art museums that have works by Tsuguharu Foujita and those works themselves

Léonard Foujita, also known as Tsuguharu Foujita, swept the European art world in the 1920s with his works of nude women with "milky backgrounds" and became a favorite of the Ecole de Paris. After that, Foujita traveled all over the world and left behind many works. Today, Foujita's name is known throughout the world.

It was after 2000 that Foujita Tsuguharu began to attract attention in Japan. As the number of retrospective exhibitions increased, his works fascinated many people. Yasushi and Megumi Ando, the husband and wife founders of the Karuizawa Ando Museum of Art, were also attracted to the "cute" cats and girls that Foujita painted, and have been collecting Foujita's works for about 20 years. In October 2022, the Karuizawa Ando Museum of Art opened in Karuizawa as a museum that exhibits only the works of Foujita.

We have opened the "Introduction to Tsuguharu Foujita's Works and the Museums that Hold His Works" page so that as many people as possible can learn about Foujita and appreciate his work. We hope that by taking an interest in the works in our museum's collection as well as those in museums around Japan, you will gain a deeper understanding of this Japanese painter who was active in Paris.

On this page, we will introduce Fujita's works at the museums introduced here as well as related works in our museum's collection.
