About "Cat's Classroom" This work was painted during Foujita's stay in New York in 1949, on his way back to France from Japan.
The cats in the work are studying in a school classroom just like humans. There are teachers asking questions, children answering seriously, children facing away, children fighting, and even children lying on the floor. This scene of an ordinary, fun day at a school, painted in New York after World War II, seems to convey the joy of an era in which peace has been restored. The work depicts every detail of Fujita's specialty of cats, from the fine whiskers and details of the cats' fur drawn with a face brush to the humorous expressions of the cats.
