Event Overview
We will be hosting a lecture by Toyoo Tamamura, owner of Villa d'Est Garden Farm and Winery, entitled "Living beside the vineyards - A new lifestyle in the Chikuma River Wine Valley." He will talk about his passion for winemaking and his efforts to revitalize and regenerate the region. Please enjoy a wide variety of Nagano wines and finger foods.

Instructor Profile

- Toyoo Tamamura, Essayist, Painter and Winery Owner
- Born on October 8, 1945 in Suginami Ward, Tokyo, as the youngest son of the painter Tamamura Hokuto.
After graduating from Tokyo Metropolitan Nishi High School, he graduated from the Department of French Literature at the University of Tokyo in 1971. During his time at university, he studied abroad at the Institute of Linguistics of the University of Paris for two years. After working as an interpreter and translator, he began his career as a writer.
He established his foothold as an essayist with the publication of "Paris: Travel Trivia Notes" in 1977 and "Cooking Tetrahedron" in 1980. He continues to write on a wide range of topics, including travel and cities, cooking, food culture, rural life, and lifestyle theory.
He lived in Karuizawa for eight years from 1983. After that, he became ill and resumed painting in 1987, which he had stopped doing since high school, and held his first solo exhibition at Hara Gallery in Ueda, Nagano Prefecture in 1989. Since 1994, he has held several solo exhibitions and traveling exhibitions around the country every year.
In 1991, he moved to Higashi-machi (now Tomi City) and ran Villa d'Est, a farm that cultivates herbs and western vegetables. In 2003, he obtained a license to produce fruit wine and opened Villa d'Est Garden Farm and Winery.
Following the publication of "Chikuma River Wine Valley: A New Perspective on Agriculture" in 2013, he founded the Japan Wine and Agriculture Research Institute in 2014, and in 2015 launched the winery "Arcanvigne" and presides over the Chikuma River Wine Academy, a course on cultivation and brewing management.

His books include "Pleasures of the Countryside," "A Special Guide to the Left Bank of Paris," "A Tour of the World's Conveyor Belt Sushi Restaurants," "From the Kitchen of Villa d'Est," "People Who Can and Can't Live in the Country," "There is No Tomorrow Better Than Today," "Proud of My Illness," and "Reviving the Village Liquor Store - The Challenge of Tazawa Wine Village."
His art books include "Toyoo Tamamura: Paris Landscape Art Collection," "FLOWERS," "HARVEST," "TRAVELS," and "GARDENS."
His latest publications are "Toyotaka Tamamura's Potato Book" (Asahi Publishing) and "Toyotaka Tamamura's French Style One Soup and Three Side Dishes" (Yama to Keikokusha).
